An Overwhelming Peace

Darlene Gay

I want to gave a testimony of an overwhelming peace in the midst of turmoil. I had just brought my husband home from the hospital after six days with pneumonia on Tuesday, November 7th, 2007. My doctor also diagnosed me with walking pneumonia that week. The next week I awoke with my left leg hurting just below the knee in the back part of my leg. By the end of the day my leg was hurting down to my foot and up into my hip. The next morning, my foot felt like it does when it goes to sleep and like I was walking on a stump.

I went to the doctor, and she said it was not a blood clot because it was not swollen and she did nothing. That afternoon, after office hours, she called and said another doctor was on call that weekend, and if it got to hurting more or went numb to call the hospital and they would contact him. The next day, about noon, the foot went completely numb, so I called the nurses' station in the hospital. When I changed shoes I noticed the bottom of my foot and under my toenails were purple.

A Startling Discovery

As soon as the doctor looked at my foot he put me in a wheel chair and took me down to the Emergency Room for another doctor to look at it. After he looked at it he told me I could lose my foot but he did not say why. He sent me by ambulance to another hospital that had a vascular surgeon. They admitted me and did an angioplasty cleaning out the arteries in my leg. As they were coming out of the last artery it ruptured. I was in surgery six to seven hours and ended up with a bacterial infection in my esophagus because of an unsanitized tube they had placed in my throat.

For several days I could not eat or drink anything because my throat, esophagus, tongue, and mouth were so sore. The doctor told me that they were going to amputate my leg because they could not get the blood clot out, or be able to put me to sleep to do the surgery, because of the infection in my esophagus. That day they gave me three units of blood.

God's Overwhelming Peace

I went into surgery and as I lay on the operating table I felt like I was laying on a bunch of white fluffy clouds with a light shining through them, and they felt so soft, warm and comforting. All of a sudden I heard a sound and thought that it was the saw and that they were starting to cut off my leg. Then an overwhelming peace came over me and I felt that the Lord was wrapping His arms around me and the thought of what was happening did not bother me. I have never experienced such a peace like this before settle over me. I wanted to stay like that forever. It has never bothered me that I lost my leg for He is faithful!
